Rio Bermudagrass

Rio is a top-performing bermudagrass known for its superior cold tolerance, early green-up, and outstanding turf quality.

Description

Developed by Johnston Seed Company, Rio was the #1 NTEP-rated variety for establishment thanks to its quick germination and dense, fine-bladed turf. It offers excellent drought and heat tolerance, making it a reliable choice for both the southern and transition zones. Rio is available with WaterGardQS, a biodegradable, pet-friendly seed coating that captures and releases soil moisture to support early growth and improve establishment in tough conditions. A reliable choice for both the southern and transition zones, making it versatile for lawns, sports fields, and other high-traffic areas.

Plant Rio in full sun when soil temps hit 65°F and rising. Use 2–3 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq ft and keep the soil lightly moist until seedlings emerge in 10–14 days. Once established, mow between 0.4–1 inch and apply 3–5 lbs of nitrogen per season—mow more often for a finer, denser turf.
